HOW TO REPURPOSE BOOKCASES IN SMALL APARTMENTS

Let's be honest. Cost of living here in Singapore is no joke. More so if you are a SAHM. It's my third year staying at home and there's nothing funny about throwing out things that you can reuse (not to mention your husband going crazy pulling out his own hair). So for this post, I'm going to share what I did to solve my shoe-valanches.

If you are going to throw out a bookcase or bookshelf, you might want to think twice. In my case, I used it for my shoes. This bookcase was from Ikea's Billy series. It is sturdy and the height of the shelves are adjustable. Knowing me, I loved that fact because I'm hella fickle.

As you can see, we adjusted most of the shelves to the same height; perfect for shoes. However, the one that is roughly at our eye level, we increased the distance from the previous shelf. We needed a space to drop our keys and it was the perfect area for us, right by our door. Another plus point would be that only four pairs can fit on one shelf (five to six pairs for children). That simply means you won't buy what you don't need. The number of shoes we buy is controllable and kept at bay because of that.

I love how it turned out and we've had this for about four years now. It is still holding on strong and it is still as practical as ever. One downside is that it is not covered and it is facing our kitchen(we live kinda near the beach so the wind that we get is strong and at times very dusty) so it gets dusty really quickly. Other than that, it works well for us. It's convenient for Adam to take and keep his shoes everyday too.

Another day another hack,
Ja
